Thammanat Prompao misspoke by saying 'request to open the SEA Games competition' despite it being the closing ceremony.
On 20 Dec 2025 GMT+7, the 2025 SEA Games closing ceremony was grandly held at Rajamangala Stadium to hand over hosting duties to Malaysia, the next host for the 2027 SEA Games.
By tradition, a speech requesting the closing of the SEA Games is given at the closing ceremony. This time, Major Thammanat Prompao, Deputy Prime Minister and President of the Watersports Association, was honored to deliver the speech.
However, Major Thammanat said at one point, "request to open the SEA Games competition," even though it was the closing ceremony, causing sports fans in the stadium to whistle loudly throughout Rajamangala Stadium.
Thailand proudly secured the top spot for gold medals at the 33rd SEA Games with a total of 233 golds, 154 silvers, and 112 bronzes.
