The Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT) confirms poker as a sport that prohibits gambling and praises Punnat Punsri, a world champion, as an exemplary individual.
Dr. Kongsak Yodmanee, governor of the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT), affirmed that poker is recognized as a sport but must not be associated with gambling. He praised "Pro Punnat" Punnat Punsri, the world's top poker player and the first Thai and Asian to hold that title, as a role model.
Dr. Kongsak Yodmanee, governor of the Sports Authority of Thailand, addressed the issue of poker as a sport in Thailand. After it was initially recognized as a sport, the Ministry of Interior later reclassified it under gambling. He said, "We must separate sports from gambling. We have now reached an understanding with the Ministry of Interior that we do not support gambling. If competitions are purely sporting events without betting, they fall under the SAT's supervision. Currently, conditions for the association’s operations are being set, primarily prohibiting any gambling-related competitions. This is clearly stated, and further details will specify what is allowed or prohibited to avoid any association with gambling risk."
"The Poker Sports Association is recognized as a sport but has not yet been certified as a 'Thailand' national body. Therefore, athletes remain under the association’s care. SAT has not provided any budget support but encourages organizing activities to develop more athletes. The association must cover all expenses. Once it meets the criteria to become a 'Thailand' national body, it will be considered for support. Currently, high-prize tournaments like those abroad cannot be held in Thailand, but national championship and athlete selection competitions are allowed without issue. Although conditions exist, ultimate decisions depend on the government, which should clarify after the election."
"Punnat Punsri (the first world champion from Thailand and Asia) recently met with us and showed great determination. He believes poker has strong potential for Thai youth to reach the world stage. Punnat is expected to be selected as Athlete of the Year and has earned over 300 million baht in prize money in one year, ranking as the world’s top poker player. He exemplifies Thai youth’s hard work. Although tournaments like those abroad cannot yet be held in Thailand, he travels worldwide to compete and brings honor to the country. He is a commendable role model, and many Thai players are now following his path and achieving success."
"Currently, the Sports Authority of Thailand has officially recognized two associations and has ordered a suspension of further registrations to set clear conditions. Regardless of where they register within the country, all must follow the same rules. We do not want gambling to interfere. We are working carefully, similar to how we managed snooker and horse racing, requiring caution. Once conditions are clearly established, provinces will be allowed to form associations under these unified rules."
