Dramatic Finish! Spectator Crosses Path, Cyclists Collide in Canary Islands Race

A serious accident occurred during the Cicloturista Condaca Salmor cycling race in the Canary Islands, Spain, last weekend after a spectator abruptly crossed in front of the cyclists, resulting in a heavy collision just a few feet from the finish line.

On 24 February 2026, reports stated that as a cyclist wearing a blue outfit and yellow helmet was sprinting towards the finish line at high speed, a young woman holding a mobile phone crossed the race route without caution. The cyclist was unable to brake or swerve in time and collided forcefully, causing both to fall onto the road amid shocked spectators.

Officials provided immediate first aid at the scene before transporting the injured to a local hospital. It was reported that the cyclist suffered a head injury and temporary memory loss, while the woman's condition has not been officially disclosed.

Although the racecourse had barriers in some areas, some fans attempted to get close to the race route. Just seconds before the incident, another spectator crossed the path but no collision occurred. This similar event originally happened in 2021 and has recently gone viral again.

This incident reminded many of an accident in the Tour de France last June, when a fan extended a sign into the route, catching a cyclist and causing multiple crashes. Several cyclists had to withdraw, and the woman responsible was later arrested.

The Canary Islands incident underscores the importance of safety in sports events, especially the need for spectator cooperation to respect rules and event areas to prevent potentially more severe tragedies in the future.

We wish both injured parties a full recovery and hope such incidents do not happen again.
