“Kometh” Advances to Reclaim Asia’s No. 1 Spot, Launches International BMX Competition at Kamol Sports Park

“Kometh” pushes forward to earn points to reclaim Asia’s No. 1 position, debuting at the international BMX competition at Kamol Sports Park at Nong Chok.

The cycling team plans to reclaim the Asia BMX No. 1 throne after “Ae” Kometh Sukprasert has fully recovered and is ready to compete for world ranking points. The first event is the ASEAN BMX RACING CUP and the Thailand BMX Championship held from 14-15 March at Kamol Sports Park, Nong Chok district. The opening ceremony on 14 March at 8:00 a.m. will be presided over by Mr. Chadchart Sittipunt, Governor of Bangkok.

General Decha Hemkrasri, Vice President of the Asian Cycling Confederation (ACC), President of the ASEAN Cycling Federation (ACF), and President of the Cycling Association of Thailand under the Royal Patronage, announced that the Association will host the international ASEAN BMX RACING CUP alongside the Thailand BMX Championship for the Royal Cup of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn in 2026. This will be the second round at Kamol Sports Park, Suwinthawong Road, Nong Chok, Bangkok, on 14-15 March. The opening ceremony on Saturday, 14 March at 8:00 a.m. will be chaired by Mr. Chadchart Sittipunt, Governor of Bangkok.

General Decha said both events are registered with the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) to accumulate BMX rider world ranking points. The ASEAN BMX RACING CUP is classified as a C1 event, while the Thailand Championship is CN class. These points affect qualification for the 2028 Olympic Games, where BMX racing uses a continuous points system from 2026 until the qualification period ends in May 2028.

General Decha added that currently the Thai men’s BMX team ranks 27th in world points, with Kometh Sukprasert holding the highest individual rank at 76th worldwide. Considering the current points and rankings, it is a challenging task to accumulate enough points to qualify for the Olympics, which only accepts the top 10 nations by May 2028.

“In the initial points collection phase, especially in 2026, Kometh will focus on reclaiming the No. 1 spot in Asian BMX racing. He was sidelined by an injury sustained during training at the 2025 Asian BMX Championship in Nagoya, Japan, which forced him to withdraw and lose 300 ranking points. He also had to prioritize the 33rd SEA Games, where he succeeded in winning two gold medals in December,” General Decha explained.

General Decha continued that currently, Thailand’s male BMX riders have been surpassed in world ranking by Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, and the Philippines. Besides the ASEAN BMX RACING CUP and Thailand Championship this year, the Association plans to send Thai BMX riders to compete for points in other C1 class Asian events, including the Philippines Racing Cup in Tagaytay, Philippines, and the Banyuwangi Supercross in Indonesia in June. This will be followed by the 2026 Asian BMX Championship and Malaysian BMX International in Malaysia in August, and then the major 20th Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan. Kometh will have opportunities to face off again against Azuma Nagai, the Japanese rider and 19th Asian Games gold medalist and 2025 Asian champion, as well as Patrick Jay Cu, his Filipino rival who lost decisively to Kometh at the 33rd SEA Games.

General Decha added that beyond accumulating points for the 2028 Olympic quota, Thai riders also have a chance to qualify by winning the 2027 Asian BMX Championship. The Cycling Association of Thailand has been granted hosting rights by the Asian Cycling Confederation (ACC) and plans to hold this event at Kamol Sports Park BMX track, likely in May 2027.

“The Cycling Association of Thailand is quite confident that in 2026 we will reclaim the Asia No. 1 title. Besides Kometh’s full recovery, we also have Mr. Phutthaphum Nakpaen, winner of two silver medals at the 33rd SEA Games, a rising star who has progressed from junior to under-23 competition and is nearly as competitive as Kometh. He will help contribute additional points,” General Decha concluded.
