It has become a major talking point in football circles as the Bank of Scotland unveiled a limited-edition £20 banknote specially designed with an image inspired by Scott McTominay’s iconic bicycle kick goal. This crucial goal helped Scotland’s national team qualify for the World Cup for the first time in 28 years.
Dated 25 May 2026, this special banknote was created to celebrate Scotland’s return to the World Cup stage after waiting since 1998. The design blends traditional banknote features with a memorable football moment that Scottish fans will never forget, set against the backdrop of the Forth Bridge, a key national symbol.
Only 100 of these notes have been printed, with 50 available for fans to acquire through auctions, prize draws, and the "Vault Shootout" event—a pop-up safe cracking challenge planned in Glasgow and Edinburgh.
All proceeds from the auctions and prize draws will be donated to Crisis Scotland, a charity supporting people experiencing homelessness in Scotland.
Revisiting the historic goal: McTominay’s bicycle kick against Denmark put Scotland ahead in the third minute, leading the team to victory and securing their long-awaited World Cup qualification after nearly three decades.
McTominay, currently playing for Napoli in Italy’s Serie A, admitted that seeing his goal featured on a banknote is an indescribably special feeling.
“Playing in the World Cup is every player’s dream, and it means so much to the fans. Moments like that belong to everyone who follows the national team. So, seeing my goal on a Scottish banknote is truly something very special,” he said.
This special edition banknote is a genuine £20 note and can be used as legal tender, but it has been designed as a collector’s item to commemorate one of the most memorable moments in Scottish football history.
