Sepak Takraw World Issues Statement Amid Thai Teams Withdrawal Drama at 2026 World Championship

ISTAF stated that any party found violating the rules must be held responsible.

On 29 May 2026, the International Sepak Takraw Federation (ISTAF) firmly reaffirmed its position following a controversial incident involving the Thailand team during the men's team final against Malaysia at the ISTAF Sepaktakraw World Cup Kuala Lumpur 2026.

The incident occurred when the match was tied at one set apiece; in the third set, with Thailand leading 14-13 in the second game, Singaporean referee Muhammad Radi awarded a point to Malaysia after Thailand struck the ball down but was judged to have stepped on the line, tying the score at 14-14.

Dato Abdul Halim Kader, ISTAF Secretary General, emphasized that all matters must be investigated fairly and professionally, but if any party is proven to have violated regulations, they must be held accountable for their actions.

“Wrong is wrong unless there is clear evidence proving otherwise,” he said firmly in his capacity as ISTAF Secretary General and co-chairman of this World Championship.

According to reports, ISTAF immediately launched a thorough investigation after the match, which took over four hours following the incident.

Dato Abdul Halim also confirmed that the ISTAF delegation will travel to Bangkok to meet with leaders of the Sepak Takraw Association of Thailand (TAT), including Dr. Sihasak Areeraksa, Secretary General and Vice President of the Sepak Takraw Association, and Mr. Thana Chaiprasit, President of the Association, to discuss key issues including the status and coordination for the upcoming King’s Cup Championship scheduled in Bangkok from 3–11 August.

Meanwhile, ISTAF urged all parties to refrain from issuing statements that could escalate tensions or damage the international image of sepak takraw.

ISTAF remains committed to protecting the integrity, discipline, and professionalism of the sport, assuring that all issues will be handled through proper procedures and with mutual respect.
