Malaysian Sepak Takraw Association President Shares Insight Following Drama Over Thai Teams Withdrawal at 2026 World Championship

The president of the Malaysian Sepak Takraw Association posted a reflection that athletes should show maturity and professionalism.

On 31 May 2026, drama erupted at the 2026 Sepak Takraw World Championship in Malaysia during the final between Thailand and Malaysia, with the incident occurring when the teams were tied at one set each.

In the third set, with Thailand leading 14-13 in the second game, Muhammad Radi, a Singaporean referee, awarded a point to Malaysia at a moment when Thailand had struck the ball down, ruling that Thailand had stepped on the line, tying the score at 14-14.

Dato' Muhammad Sumali Reduan, president of the Malaysian Sepak Takraw Association (PSM), posted a message offering insight that seemed connected to the ongoing drama.

"With the excitement of the World Cup underway, I returned home to watch children play football, wearing new shoes. During the game, one child acted as a sideline referee, and some people were unhappy with his decisions, almost leading to a confrontation with the child."

"However, I continue to uphold sportsmanship, because if we want sepak takraw to be recognized internationally, every athlete should demonstrate maturity and professionalism both on and off the field."
