Regulations Clarified After Buriram United Players Celebration Gesture Possibly Linked to Politics Ahead of February 2026 Election

Regulations clarified after Buriram United footballers made celebratory gestures that may be politically linked ahead of the February 2026 election.

On 15 Jan 2026, Buriram United secured a 4-0 home victory over Pattani FC, advancing to the FA Cup 2025/26 quarterfinals. The draw will take place at Rajapruek Club on 27 Jan 2026, with matches scheduled for 25 Feb 2026.

During the match, Buriram United players made a 'plus' gesture, and Teerathon Boonmatan formed a symbol resembling the number 37, similar to the sign used by Bhumjaithai party members, which is the party's number for the party-list election on 8 Feb 2026.

However, referencing the Football Association of Thailand's statement during the 2019 election under Dr. Somyot Poompanmoung's presidency, the following was issued:

According to the Football Association of Thailand under the Royal Patronage, its governance regulations apply between the association and its members. "Article 4 stipulates political and religious neutrality, prohibiting discrimination against any country or individuals based on nationality, gender, language, religion, politics, or other reasons. Any actions violating these regulations are strictly prohibited and may result in suspension or removal from membership."

To prevent such incidents, the Football Association requests members to monitor and prevent any conduct—direct or indirect—by clubs, teams, officials, players, or supporters that could involve such actions, whether through documents, signs, diagrams, still or moving images, or any symbols conveying similar meanings. Particularly, such actions may affect international relations.
