Different story! Coach Sakon insists he was deceived by Mon Thong into holding a sign on 8 February supporting the constitutional amendment.
On 19 Jan 2026 GMT+7, following a case where Chaturon Chaisang, chairman of the campaign committee for the referendum and the people's constitution from the Pheu Thai Party, posted a clip showing players and coaches of the Mon Thong Wittaya team from Chachoengsao province joining a campaign saying "8 February, vote yes to amend the constitution."
The clip went viral online, sparking divided opinions between supporters and opponents of the constitutional amendment. Meanwhile, many questioned the appropriateness of involving sports and youth in political matters.
Recently, Coach Sakon Kliengprasert, head coach of Mon Thong Wittaya School, spoke on the Phutta Talk program, insisting he was tricked into holding the sign.
Coach Sakon explained that the event was uncoordinated and unannounced; it happened while the team was practicing football when a group of adults approached to take photos. He and the children believed it was just a normal photo session. He emphasized that the school and football team do not favor any political party and focus solely on sports.
“They are just kids; we are not the instigators. We only spoke along and have never supported any political party. I still stand by my original position and have not changed,” Coach Sakon said.
He also observed that in the past, no politician or group had seriously helped them, but once this became an issue, it was politicized. He urged those who posted the clip to consider the impact on the children and teachers.
Coach Sakon stressed that if the support genuinely benefits children and youth, any political party is welcome to help—but it must be sincere, not just using policies or political image. He ended with a sarcastic remark that if politics is expected of him, he might as well run for prime minister instead of coaching football.
