What drama unfolded? Sukhothai FC vs. Rayong FC – Why was the referee’s standard so lacking?
Drama in the Thai League match between Sukhothai FC and Rayong FC. Both teams were in a desperate situation before the game, making every point crucial. Sukhothai had 21 points and was fighting hard to avoid relegation, while Rayong FC had 28 points and had not won in four consecutive matches. Every point mattered for survival in the league.
In this intense match, Satchakorn Saenju served as the main referee. Before halftime, both teams were reduced to 10 players each: Weslen Junior and Chaipol Adton.
Trigger for drama: the late-game VAR controversy at Thung Thale Luang Stadium.
The incident occurred in the 88th minute, with Sukhothai leading 2-1. Rayong FC appeared to deserve a penalty after the ball struck the arm of Jo Paredes.
Despite a lengthy VAR review, the referee ultimately denied Rayong FC a penalty. This led to strong protests from the players and coaching staff of the Blue Dragon team. The case resembled an earlier incident at the 55th minute when Sukhothai was awarded a penalty for a handball in the box.
Recently, the official Facebook page of RYFC – Rayong FC clearly announced they would "appeal the referee's decision in this match." Although they stated this was not an excuse for the results and apologized to fans for failing to secure a win in five straight matches, the club felt compelled to defend the team’s rights against unclear refereeing standards.
This incident highlights a major problem that occurs frequently, damaging the "Thai League". It causes frustration among fans who want to enjoy Thai football but are met with inconsistent refereeing standards.
No matter how intense the competition becomes, fans will gradually lose faith and stop following because no one wants to pay to watch under such conditions.
