Thailand's under-16 national football team concluded their 2026 ASEAN Championship campaign in disappointing fashion after a thrilling 2-3 defeat to Laos in the final group stage match at Gelora Joko Samudro Stadium in Indonesia.
On 18 April 2026, coach Sirisak Yodyathai, known as “Coach Toy,” made several lineup changes, appointing Prez Aves Kelly Kuaku as the key figure in attack, supported by several promising young forwards.
In the first half, Thailand dominated the game and took the lead at the 14th minute through Viphusit Srichan’s individual skill, who drove the ball sharply into the net with his right foot. Despite further chances, Thailand was unable to extend their lead, finishing the first 45 minutes ahead by just one goal.
In the second half, the game opened up with exciting exchanges before Laos equalized at the 53rd minute with a beautiful free kick by Anulak Singsawang. However, Thailand fought back and regained the lead at the 62nd minute through a follow-up shot by Prez Aves Kelly Kuaku.
Towards the end of the match, a turning point occurred when Thailand’s defense lost concentration, allowing Laos to score two quick goals from Sisombat Wilaison in the 71st and 76th minutes, overturning the score to 3-2 in favor of Laos.
In the remaining time, Thailand pushed hard to equalize but failed, ending the game with a regrettable loss that resulted in their elimination at the group stage.
The Thailand U16 team is scheduled to return home on 19 April 2026 at around 22:00 from Suvarnabhumi International Airport, carrying significant lessons to address before their next tournament.
