Khon Kaen Ready to Host Kings Cup 2026, Plans to Upgrade Stadium to International Standards

Wattana Changlao confirmed that Khon Kaen is ready to host, with plans to upgrade the PAO stadium to international standards and the intention to bring international-level sports competitions back to the area.

On 28 April 2026, Khon Kaen province, led by Provincial Administrative Organization President Wattana Changlao, officially submitted its bid to host the King's Cup 2026. He spoke with Thairath Sports about the readiness and the conditions presented to the Football Association of Thailand for consideration.

Regarding the readiness of the Khon Kaen PAO stadium, representatives from the Football Association of Thailand were invited to inspect and provide advice on upgrading the stadium to AFC standards, enabling it to host international-level competitions. Plans have been made to improve several parts of the Khon Kaen PAO stadium.

- Locker rooms: plans to renovate all four rooms to meet required standards.

- Playing surface: plans include re-laying new grass to improve the quality of the pitch.

- Seating: additional seats will be installed, with the exact number to be confirmed after consultation with the association.

- Stadium lighting: the current lighting meets Thai League 1 standards, but international standards require an increase from 1,600 lux to 1,800 lux.

As for the budget, no specific funds have been allocated yet, as detailed renovation plans and event requirements from the association are awaited to assess costs. Similarly, ticket pricing will be evaluated with the association if Khon Kaen is selected as host.

Regarding other facilities, President Wattana assured that Khon Kaen is fully prepared, with 4- to 5-star hotels and convenient transportation, including an airport within the province.

Another reason Khon Kaen proposed to host is that it has been a long time since the province held international competitions, so the King's Cup could help stimulate the local economy.

“Khon Kaen has not hosted an event like this for a very long time, so we want to have the opportunity again,” he said.

The announcement of the selected host for the King's Cup 2026 will be made at the FA Awards event in July.
