"Gockel" speaks frankly after Thailand U17 national team draws with Myanmar, sending a message to Thai football if it wants to reach the World Cup.
On 13 May 2026, Marco Gockel, head coach of the Thailand U17 national football team, gave an interview following the third match of the AFC U17 Asian Championship.
In that match, Thailand drew 2-2 with Myanmar, finishing third in Group A and ending their hopes of qualifying for the U17 World Cup this time.
Marco Gockel said of the Thailand U17 team, "Our dream was to reach the World Cup. Ultimately, we couldn't achieve it, so I feel very sad and disappointed. In the end, we earned just one point."
"Before the game, our goal was to win, but we started poorly, falling behind 0-2. Although we managed to equalize 2-2, we gave our all before and during the match to win, but in the end, we failed."
"I am saddened and disappointed that we could not fulfill the hopes of the entire Thai nation. I personally wanted to lead the team to the World Cup this time. I hope that in the future, those involved with Thai football will plan and prepare the next generation better in their dream to reach the World Cup. For now, I am sorry."
"I think the players deserved hope. Although I could not fulfill it, the children were upset and cried because everyone was honored to represent Thailand. Everyone in the locker room felt very bad."
"From my perspective, having spent a long time with this squad during training camps, I cannot blame the players. Everyone gave their best and has talent. I hope that after this tournament, all will strive to prepare the next generation of athletes."
Following this, the Thailand U17 team will return home, expected to arrive at Suvarnabhumi International Airport on 14 May 2026 at approximately 13:45.
