Hudson Explains Reasons for Selecting 23 Players Ahead of FIFA Day Matches Against Kuwait and China, Linking to Theeraphat and Erawan

Anthony Hudson, head coach of the Thailand national team, revealed the reasons for selecting this group of 23 players ahead of the FIFA Day friendlies against Kuwait and China, also linking to Theeraphat Prue-thong and Erawan Garnier.

On 15 May 2026, Anthony Hudson, coach of the "War Elephants" Thailand national football team, explained why he chose these 23 players before facing the national teams of Kuwait and China in FIFA Day friendly matches, also referencing Theeraphat Prue-thong from Hokkaido Consadole Sapporo in Japan's J2 League and Erawan Garnier from Lens in France's Ligue 1.

Anthony Hudson stated, "There were several important factors in selecting the squad this time. First, we needed to rest some players after a long league season just ended. Some were physically and mentally fatigued, others had injuries. We took this opportunity to allow them proper rest and recovery, while also giving other players a chance to showcase their abilities and be future options, especially looking ahead to the Asian Cup, to expand our pool of players. This was the main criterion for selection."

"Regarding the full-back position, we selected three players aiming to increase attacking options. For the left-back spot, options are very limited, and some players needed rest due to injuries accumulated over the season. We saw this as an opportunity for change. Importantly, I believe all three will meet the team’s needs in this preparation phase. The goal is to keep some players fresh for future camps."

"In the center-back position, Phiawat Akkatham has shown excellent form with Port FC. Although Adisorn Promrak hasn’t played much time, when given opportunities at Ratchaburi, I was impressed by his mentality and attitude. I have not worked with him before, so this is a chance to collaborate with him now."

"In midfield, I want to highlight Veerathep Pomphan and Thitipan Puangchan, who have been given opportunities this time. I regret not calling them up earlier for various reasons, but now is a good chance. Both are deserving as I know their quality and ability well. This is a good opportunity to work together."

"Regarding attacking midfielders, many are young players. I’m excited about all of them. These youth bring energy and hunger to play, combined with tactical plans prepared for when we don’t have possession. I believe they will fit well, and each is performing very well individually. They have enough potential to contribute to attacking and breaking down opponents’ defenses."

"As for Theeraphat and Erawan, it is my responsibility to help them understand our playing style—what we want to do on the field. I will do my best in every way. We expect their performances to align with our style, both in possession and without the ball, including off-field matters. It is my main duty to ensure they fully comprehend the game plan."

"In attack, Theerasil Dangda is certainly a key figure. I always say that a camp must include senior players who set standards and serve as good examples to younger and new players. In the past two camps, we tried to call Theerasil, but due to injuries, he couldn’t join. This time, it’s important he acts as a role model in terms of composure and the atmosphere of national team duty, as well as his club contributions. Theerasil’s quality will elevate and set standards for the younger players. I don’t want to put pressure on him, but I believe his character will be a good example for the team."

"Our goal for the two friendlies is currently focused on the game against Kuwait first, because the match against China requires a different approach. What we expect from the players is aggressiveness in attacking and alertness in team play. This is what we will show against Kuwait, and I expect this from every player. For China, we have gathered information and analyzed them, and will use a different game plan. Overall, the most important elements are intensity, concentration, and hunger to perform in both games."

"Regarding team preparation, I wish we had more time, but starting the camp two days earlier allowed the team more time together and better readiness. We want every player in this camp to succeed, and that is the reason behind our preparation."

"Finally, to the fans: our first home match will be at Pathumthani Stadium. Fans are extremely important. Every player expects the fans to come and support us because they mean a lot to us. We will try our best to repay the fans who come out in large numbers to cheer us on in the first match against Kuwait at Pathumthani Stadium."

The players listed will report at the Novotel Future Park Rangsit hotel on 30 May 2026 at 12:00 p.m. and train in the evening at the BG Training Center.

The Thailand national team’s FIFA Day friendly schedule in June 2026 includes two matches: On 5 June 2026 at 7:30 p.m., Thailand will face Kuwait, ranked 134th in the world, at Pathumthani Stadium, followed by an away game against China on 9 June 2026 at Huanglong Sports Center. Both matches will be broadcast live exclusively on Thairath TV Channel 32, online at www.thairath.co.th/tv/live, Thairath Sport’s Facebook page, and YouTube channel.https://www.youtube.com/@ThairathSport
