The Thai national team has returned home, with "Patrick" opening up about his 17-month comeback that helped the team defeat Singapore in the 2026 ASEAN Cup.
On 16 August 2026 at 17:00, at Don Mueang Airport, the Thai national football team arrived back in Thailand after completing their mission in the first leg of the 2026 ASEAN Cup semifinal in Singapore.
In that match, the Thai team won 3-1 away against Singapore, with two goals from Teerasil Dangda and one from Sek San Ratri, gaining a significant advantage before the second leg at home.
Patrick Gustavsson, striker for the Thai national team, said, "Yesterday I felt very happy. We got a good result with a 3-1 win. Going into the second leg, we are confident."
"The year 2025 was the toughest year of my life. I am glad to have the chance to play and return to serve the Thai national team, being able to assist and help the team win."
"My physical condition is okay now. It is preseason, and I am fit. When I play, I just focus on giving my best. For the next game, I invite the fans to come cheer for us at Rajamangala on 18 August."
Patrick Gustavsson returned to play for the Thai national team after 17 months, since the first match of the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers, Group D, on 25 March 2025, when he scored the winning goal to help the War Elephants defeat Sri Lanka 1-0.
After this, the Thai national team will stay at the Novotel Future Park Rangsit hotel to recover and prepare for the second leg of the 2026 ASEAN Cup semifinal.
