Before the match, Vietnam held a significant advantage, having won 2-0 away against Malaysia on Sunday, 16 August. The first half ended scoreless, 0-0, leaving Vietnam ahead 2-0 on aggregate.
In the second half, at the 53rd minute, Malaysia nearly took the lead. Initially, Pavithran Goonalan struck a powerful shot from the left side of the penalty area, saved by goalkeeper Patrick Le Kieng. The rebound fell to Paulo Josue, who fired a close-range shot that was also deflected over the crossbar.
At the 62nd minute, Vietnam took a 1-0 lead. The team advanced down the left, delivering a low cross into the box. Dương Tiến Anh's first attempt was blocked by Malaysian defender Faris Danis, but Nguyễn Xuân Sơn, quicker than anyone else, followed up with a powerful second shot to score.
In the 89th minute, Vietnam sealed the victory when Nguyễn Xuân Sơn used his strength to push past Malaysian defenders and scored past the goalkeeper, sending the ball into the net.
The match ended with Vietnam securing a 2-0 win, resulting in a 4-0 aggregate victory over Malaysia. Vietnam advanced to the 2026 ASEAN Cup final against Thailand. The first leg will be played away on 22 August, followed by the home leg on 26 August.
