Thailand National Team Faces Double Setback After Losing to Vietnam in 2026 ASEAN Cup Final Leg 1 at Home

Thailand's national team suffered a double setback after losing at home to Vietnam in the first leg of the 2026 ASEAN Cup final.

On 22 August 2026, the latest world ranking for Thailand's national team was released following their 0-2 home loss to Vietnam, ranked 99th globally, in the first leg of the 2026 ASEAN Cup final.

This result put Thailand at a disadvantage ahead of their away match in Vietnam in the second leg of the final on Wednesday, 26 August, and also caused them to lose FIFA ranking points due to this defeat.

Previously, Thailand had won five consecutive matches in the 2026 ASEAN Cup, gaining 7.54 points to reach 1,258.34 points, improving unofficially from 94th to 90th in the world rankings.

However, Thailand then suffered two consecutive home losses—1-2 to Singapore in the second leg of the semifinals—resulting in a 3.40-point deduction and a drop to 91st place unofficially.

Most recently, Thailand's home loss to Vietnam today caused a further 2.60-point deduction, leaving them with 1,252.34 FIFA ranking points.

As a result, Thailand has dropped to 93rd in the world unofficially, behind China at 91st with 1,254.81 points and Bahrain at 92nd with 1,254.41 points.

*Note – Thailand's official world ranking will be updated after the tournament concludes.
