Unbelievable: Two Strange but True Facts After Thailands National Team Defeats Vietnam in FIFA ASEAN Cup

Unbelievable: Two strange but true facts after Thailand's national team beat Vietnam in the FIFA ASEAN Cup.

On 30 Sep 2026 GMT+7, two strange but true facts were revealed after Thailand's national team defeated Vietnam 2-0 in the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 group stage, matchday 2 of Group B, securing a full 6 points and guaranteeing a spot in the final.

This victory allowed Thailand, under coach Anthony Hudson, to finally overcome Vietnam after failing to win in their last four encounters (3 losses, 1 draw) in the ASEAN Cup finals over two consecutive editions (2024 and 2026), home and away.

The strange but true fact is that Thailand ended Vietnam's 27-match unbeaten streak that had lasted more than two years. The "Golden Stars," coached by Kim Sang-sik, had won 23 matches and drawn 4 during that period.

Vietnam's last defeat before this was also to Thailand, a 1-2 loss in a FIFA Day friendly named the LPBank Cup at My Dinh Stadium in Hanoi, Vietnam, on 10 Sep 2024.

Only two Thai players appeared in both matches against Vietnam: Nicholas Mickelson, who started in the lineup, and Anan Yodsangwal, who came on as a substitute.

Thailand's next match in the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 Group B stage will be against the Philippines, ranked 135th in the world, at the Si Jalak Harupat Stadium in Bandung, Indonesia, on Friday, 2 Oct 2026 GMT+7 at 16:00.
