The Thai women's national football team missed the opportunity to reach the gold medal final after losing to the Philippines 2-4 in a penalty shootout and will now compete for the bronze medal against Indonesia.
On 14 December 2025 GMT+7, during the women's football competition at the 33rd SEA Games held at Chonburi Stadium, the Thai women's national team, champions of Group A, faced the Philippines, runners-up of Group B, to compete for a place in the final.
In this match, coach Nueng (Nuengrit Saengsuwan) arranged the lineup with Saowalak Peng-ngam as the striker, supported by Natalee Ngorsuwan and Phatthanan Uppachai in attack.
The game started with both teams exchanging attacks immediately. At the 12th minute, Thailand had a chance when Pluemjai Sonthisawat took a powerful shot that hit the crossbar, a disappointing miss. The game then shifted in favor of Chaba Kaew, while the Philippines threatened with aerial balls but could not beat goalkeeper Tichanan Sadchuen.
At the 39th minute, Thailand nearly scored from a corner kick when Sunisa Srangthaisong curled a left-footed shot that struck the crossbar for the second time in the match. The first half ended 0-0.
In the second half, at minute 53, Chaba Kaew finally broke the deadlock when a Philippines defender failed to clear the ball, allowing Jiraporn Mongkoldee to volley it in off the far post, putting Thailand ahead 1-0.
Thailand had several opportunities to extend their lead but lacked finishing precision. Then, in the 87th minute, Thailand conceded a penalty for handball, and Kay Jael Marie converted it for the Philippines to equalize 1-1, forcing extra time.
During extra time, both teams played attacking football. The Philippines struck a long-range shot that hit the crossbar, while Thailand nearly scored the winning goal through Jiraporn Mongkoldee but failed to convert. The match proceeded to a penalty shootout.
In the penalty shootout, the Philippines were precise, scoring with four attempts, while Thailand converted only two. This resulted in a 4-2 penalty shootout win for the Philippines, who advanced to the gold medal match against Vietnam.
Meanwhile, the Thai women's national team will compete for the bronze medal against Indonesia on 17 December 2025 GMT+7 at 15:30 at Chonburi Stadium.
