On 16 August 2026, in the first leg of the 2026 ASEAN Football Championship (ASEAN Cup 2026) semi-finals, Malaysia, ranked second in Group B, hosted the defending champions Vietnam, who topped Group A.
In the first half, Vietnam took the lead 1-0 during injury time at 45+5 minutes when Duong Tien Anh crossed from the right flank to the far post, where Nguyen Xuan Son executed a beautiful torpedo header.
In the second half, at the 86th minute, Vietnam sealed the game with a decisive goal from an own goal by Malaysia's defender Faris Danis, resulting in a final score of 2-0.
At the end of the match, Vietnam secured an advantage over Malaysia before returning home for the second leg at My Dinh Stadium in Hanoi on Wednesday, 19 August.
