Hudson Explains Why Some Thai National Team Players Without Club Appearances Are Called Up (Video)

Hudson explains the reasons behind calling up Thai national team players who have not played for their clubs but still appear on the list (video).

On 2 November 2026, Anthony Hudson, coach of the Thai national team, addressed several questions from Thai football fans during the "Clear Sideline" program on Thairath Sport, ahead of announcing the squad for the King's Cup 2026 tournament in Sisaket province tomorrow (3 November).

One key topic was the selection of national team players, many of whom have not played for their clubs but were called up by English coach Anthony Hudson for the "War Elephants". Hudson explained this on the "Clear Sideline" program as follows.

"What we can do is adapt as best as possible to the situation. First, with the increased number of foreign players, opportunities to play have decreased. In the previous camp, we had Iklas Sanhorn, and in March we brought in Jonathan Khemdee, which sparked heavy criticism."

"Because he barely played at the club level, just 10 minutes, sometimes as right back. Of course, some players haven't played for their clubs. Okay, we must also respect each club head coach's decisions."

"But these are high-level players. For example, bringing in Iklas or Jonathan, you can feel they are good enough to help raise the national team's level."

"Honestly, I understand many Thai players have great potential but end up on the bench, even though some deserve to start weekly. Some Thai players are frankly better than some foreign players forced into the lineup. Many watch this every week."

"Okay, some may get no chances, but as I said, even if they don't play, we believe some can show their potential. This is one of the main groups we selected."

"For example, Iklas and several young players have shown excellent performances. These players are the future of Thai football. They need opportunities to play and express themselves. They have special talents."

"Regarding Manuel Tom Bihr, when first called up, many asked why he was chosen, but actually, he is the most consistent defender in the squad."

"As for Iklas, everyone criticized his inclusion in the recent camp, but we know that when he joins, he has a special role because he has qualities many players lack. When situations become clearer and we need players of this style, we want options that can make a difference and create chances."
