War causes Messi and Jamal to possibly be affected by attacks between the US, Israel, and Iran.
On 3 March 2026, Lionel Messi, the star captain of Argentina's national team, and Lamine Yamal, a star of Spain's national team, may be affected by the Middle East war involving Iran, the United States, and Israel.
The joint operation by the US and Israel launched a major attack, resulting in the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, last Sunday.
Iran then retaliated by launching missile strikes against Israel and US airbases in the Persian Gulf region, including in the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Bahrain, which also impacted the sports world.
The 2026 Finalissima, a champion-versus-champion match between Spain, winners of Euro 2024, and Argentina, winners of Copa America 2024, was scheduled to be played at Lusail Stadium in Lusail, Qatar, on 27 March.
However, the situation led the Qatar Football Association to postpone all football matches as people sought shelter in fear. Nevertheless, the Spanish Football Federation continues to push for the Finalissima 2026 and a friendly match against Egypt in Qatar on 30 March to proceed as planned.
Alvaro de Miguel, Secretary General of the Spanish Football Federation, said, “The situation there is concerning, but the Finalissima match has not been canceled. Qatar has informed us that all matches are suspended until further notice, but this does not mean this match is canceled.”
“We still plan to play against Argentina and Egypt. We still have that desire, although it is true that we must wait. It is too soon to conclude whether the matches will happen or whether they will be held in Qatar.”
“We will consult with UEFA and CONMEBOL to assess the true extent of the conflict and consider how to proceed. It is too early to evaluate the situation, but this week will be crucial to know what will happen with this match.”
“We need guarantees that wherever we play, the conditions will be safe and peaceful. I hope to receive news soon.”
Meanwhile, UEFA stated, “The Finalissima match on 27 March is being closely monitored and assessed by UEFA together with CONMEBOL and the organizing committee.”
