The Italy national team was brought to tears after enduring 120 minutes before losing on penalties to Bosnia, missing out on the World Cup for the third consecutive time.


In the 2026 World Cup European playoff final on Tuesday night, 31 Mar 2026 GMT+7, the notable match was between Bosnia and Italy.

Early in the first half, in the 15th minute, Italy took a 1-0 lead as Nicolo Barella set up Moise Kean, who struck a beautiful right-footed shot into the top corner.

Then in the 41st minute, Italy was down to 10 men when Alessandro Bastoni fouled Amar Memić, who was breaking through on goal, resulting in a red card. The first half ended with Italy leading by one goal.

In the second half, the 79th minute saw Bosnia equalize 1-1 as Amar Dedić crossed for Edin Džeko, whose header was saved but the rebound fell to Haris Tabaković, who scored. At the end of 90 minutes, the score was tied 1-1, leading to extra time.

During extra time, neither side scored, so after 120 minutes the match was decided by penalties. Bosnia was far more accurate, winning 4-1 and advancing to the 2026 World Cup finals, while Italy suffered heartbreak, missing the World Cup for the third consecutive time.
