Carlo Ancelotti, head coach of the Brazil national team, caused a stir in the football world after reports revealed he spoke with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to seek his opinion on recalling superstar Neymar to the national team for the 2026 World Cup.
On 16 April 2026, the Brazilian leader disclosed via his personal YouTube channel that Ancelotti had asked about public opinion regarding Neymar’s return, and he commented that if the player is physically fit, he still has sufficient potential for the national team. He stated,
"I talked with Ancelotti and he asked me whether I thought Neymar should be called up. I told him that if Neymar is physically ready, he already has the skills."
Neymar, 34, has not played for Brazil since October 2023 due to a severe knee injury. He then returned to play for Santos in his home country and is currently regaining fitness to compete for a spot in the national squad for his fourth World Cup appearance.
Ancelotti has clearly reaffirmed that player selection will primarily depend on physical readiness, noting that Neymar still has about two months to prove himself before the final squad is announced.
"I have said this many times and it is very clear: I will only call up players who are physically ready. Neymar still has two months to show that he qualifies to play in the next World Cup," he said.
Meanwhile, Brazilian fans continue to call for Neymar’s return to the national team, reflecting the significant role and influence he still holds within the 'Samba' squad despite being in the later stage of his career.
