Argentina Faces Concern as Lionel Messi Injured and Substituted 17 Days Before World Cup

The Argentina national team is anxiously awaiting news after Lionel Messi was injured in the latest league match, just 17 days before the World Cup.

On 25 May 2026, the Argentina national team is deeply concerned after Lionel Messi suffered an injury in the latest Major League Soccer game, where Inter Miami defeated Philadelphia Union 6-4. This was their final match before the World Cup 2026 preparations began.

Messi was injured and substituted in the 73rd minute, holding his left thigh as he immediately walked off to the locker room. Previously, Messi had suffered an Achilles tendon injury in November 2022 while playing for Paris Saint-Germain, but he ultimately played every match for Argentina in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Guillermo Hoyos, head coach of Inter Miami, said after the game that it was too early to determine whether Messi was injured, but hinted that the substitution was a precaution due to the poor field conditions.

Argentina is placed in Group J alongside Algeria, Austria, and Jordan. Their first group stage match is against Algeria on 16 June in Kansas City. The Argentina team will play two friendly matches before the tournament at university-level stadiums in the United States: against Honduras on 6 June and against Iceland on 9 June.
