Tuchel Defends After England Narrowly Beat New Zealand

Full of excuses! Thomas Tuchel, coach of England's national team, opened up after managing only a narrow victory over New Zealand in a warm-up match ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Thomas Tuchel admitted he was not impressed with his team's "freestyle" playing style during the recent warm-up game, where England barely edged New Zealand 1-0.

Harry Kane's goal just before halftime decided the disappointing match at Raymond James Stadium. Tuchel had much to ponder after his team failed to impress in the penultimate World Cup warm-up game.

Tuchel said, "I'm not very satisfied. I preferred the second half to the first. We played more according to our positions, and that’s why we played faster. Without the ball, we were also more aggressive. In the first half, we weren’t in position and played too freestyle."

"That slowed our game down and made pressing on the counterattack difficult because we weren’t in the positions we needed when starting attacks. That was the main story of this game."

"We crossed from the sides and took many long shots, which is not our style. We played a lot of long balls. That wasn't part of our training in the last four days."

"We only trained once under the sun, and the match felt very strange. But it’s good we faced these conditions because that’s why we came here. We want this, and we need to adapt because it will happen eventually."

"But the pitch was very difficult; it was uneven and didn’t help us at all."

For the 2026 World Cup, England is in Group L alongside Croatia, Ghana, and Panama.
