A Look at the Technology for Referees at the 2026 World Cup and Their New Equipment

A look at the technology for referees at the 2026 World Cup and their new equipment.

The 2026 World Cup has officially kicked off. Beyond the on-field competition, one aspect capturing global football fans' attention is the "referee equipment," which has been outfitted with comprehensive new technology to enhance officiating efficiency and elevate the viewing experience.

Key equipment introduced for use at the 2026 World Cup includes:

The "communication microphone" is used to connect with assistant referees and the VAR room, as well as to announce important decisions directly to fans in the stadium and viewers watching the broadcast.

There is also a "communication headset" for receiving information continuously from assistant referees in the VAR room and related team members throughout the match.

The "Ref Cam," a head-mounted camera with image stabilization, transmits the referee’s real-time viewpoint, allowing fans to better understand the situation and the perspective behind decisions.

FIFA has collaborated with Lenovo to develop this technology, aiming to improve image quality and broadcast stability.

Additionally, referees continue to use standard familiar equipment such as whistles, goal-line technology-connected watches, stopwatches, spray for marking the wall's position and distance, and notebooks for recording yellow and red cards. The 2026 World Cup marks a significant advancement in technology use for officiating; unlike previous international tournaments like Euro 2024, where "Ref Cam" was not officially used in every match and decisions were not announced directly via microphone by referees.

For this World Cup, FIFA has decided to implement "Ref Cam" in all matches and allow referees to announce VAR-based decisions directly to spectators via microphone. This approach has been trialed and refined in several top leagues to increase transparency and understanding of on-field decisions.
