The Jalisco State Association of Surveying and Geoinformatics Engineers decided to dismiss the 'Mexican fan' from his position after he made a racist gesture toward a 'South Korean fan' during the 2026 World Cup.
On 14 June 2026, South Korean influencer Lee Nonyang, who has 260,000 followers on Facebook, attended the 2026 World Cup match between South Korea and the Czech Republic, where the 'Taegeuk Warriors' won 2-1.
What caught widespread attention was when she was filming a clip inside the stadium and a Mexican fan made a racist gesture by pulling the corners of his eyes downward, mimicking 'Slant Eye'.
Lee Nonyang posted the clip on her personal social media, which quickly went viral overnight. Media investigations revealed the man was Ulises Fernando Bernal Miramontes, president of the College of Geomatics and Informatics Engineers of Jalisco, Mexico.
Bernal posted a statement saying, "Over the past few days, a video has been circulated online that has sparked various reactions and opinions."
"Because of this, I believe it is appropriate to apologize publicly."
Recently, a spokesperson for the Jalisco State Association of Surveying and Geoinformatics Engineers told U.S. media outlet the New York Post that Bernal would be removed from his position.
