Male Mexican Football Fan Apologizes for Racist Gesture Toward South Korean Supporter

A male football fan wearing a Mexico jersey apologized to South Korean fans after exhibiting racist behavior at the 2026 World Cup.

On 15 June 2026, Lee Non-yang, a South Korean influencer with 260,000 Facebook followers, attended the 2026 World Cup match between South Korea and the Czech Republic, where the "Taegeuk Warriors" won 2-1.

During the match, while filming a clip inside the stadium, a Mexican fan made a racist gesture by pulling the corners of his eyes to mimic slanted eyes, known as the "Slant Eye" gesture.

The fan involved was Ulises Fernando Bernal Miramontes, president of the College of Geomatics and Informatics Engineering of Jalisco, Mexico.

A spokesperson for the Association of Surveying and Geoinformatics Engineers of Jalisco told U.S. media outlet the New York Post that Bernal would be removed from his position.

Ulises Fernando Bernal has since posted an apology regarding the incident.

"Therefore, I believe it is important to publicly apologize," he stated.

"I sincerely regret everything this incident has caused. I have taken time to reflect on what happened and understand the responsibility I bear in this situation."

"Throughout my personal and professional life, I have always strived to treat others with respect, and I will continue to ensure my actions consistently reflect those values."
