"World Cup 2026 Coach" First to Be Fired After Poor Performance in Opening Match
On 15 June 2026 GMT+7, Tunisia's national football team officially decided to dismiss Sabbri Lamouchi as head coach after only one match in the first round of Group F at the 2026 World Cup.
This decision came immediately after Tunisia suffered a heavy 1-5 defeat to Sweden. Romain Molina, a journalist covering the Tunisian team, revealed the news and confirmed that the Tunisian Football Federation acted swiftly due to tensions in the locker room and the significant loss.
Sabbri Lamouchi had coached Tunisia for only five matches, with an unsatisfactory record of one win, one draw, and three losses. The final straw was the crushing defeat to Sweden. It is expected that Mondher Kebaier, the former coach from 2019 to 2022, will take over temporarily ahead of the second match against Japan on 20 June.
Sabbri Lamouchi became the first head coach among the 48 national teams in the 2026 World Cup to lose his job.
