Carragher is not surprised that the England national team overlooked a star player despite a withdrawal in the 2026 World Cup.
Following Thomas Tuchel's shock decision to call up Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah to replace Newcastle United's right-back Tino Livramento, who withdrew from the 2026 World Cup due to a calf injury, instead of selecting natural right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold from Real Madrid.
Recently, Jamie Carragher, former England national team defender, commented that he was not surprised by Tuchel's decision because Tuchel prefers defenders with versatility rather than those who play a single role.
"We know Thomas Tuchel's stance regarding Trent. When you look at some players in the team, you see he chooses center-backs who can also play as right-backs rather than natural right-backs."
"We know Alexander-Arnold has special qualities. That's why Real Madrid wanted him and why Liverpool fans were so upset to lose him. Perhaps his defensive weaknesses are why Tuchel did not select him. He seems to focus more on the negatives than the positives."
