
Meet the Curaçao goalkeeper who set the record for the most saves in a single World Cup match,
On 21 June 2026, after Curaçao held Ecuador to a 0-0 draw, they secured their first-ever point in World Cup history.
In this match, Ecuador had 15 shots on target, all of which were saved by Curaçao’s goalkeeper, Eloy Room.
The 37-year-old Room set the record for the highest number of saves in a World Cup knockout stage match since official save statistics began in 1966.
At the same time, Ecuador’s 15 shots on target without scoring is the highest such total by any team in the World Cup since at least 1966.
Who is Eloy Room?
Room was born in Nijmegen, a city in eastern Netherlands, and developed through the academy of Vitesse Arnhem, a top-tier Dutch league club.
He first played for the Curaçao national team in 2015 after previously appearing once for the Netherlands under-20 team.
Currently, Room plays for Miami FC in the US second division. Previously, he played for Columbus Crew in Major League Soccer and for Cercle Brugge in Belgium.
