On 21 June 2026 GMT+7, Park Ji-sung, former South Korean national team midfielder, praised Japan’s outstanding performance after their commanding 4-0 group stage win over Tunisia in Group F at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
After the match, Park Ji-sung, who was commentating for a South Korean TV station, expressed high praise for the remarkable development of Japanese football.
“I clearly feel how much Japan has progressed compared to the past. They played comfortably and confidently, almost as if it were a friendly match rather than a World Cup game.”
The former Manchester United star also highlighted the strong foundation of Japanese football, saying
“Currently, nearly 100 Japanese players are active in European leagues. Their improvement didn’t happen overnight but through steady, continuous development leading to this level.”
At the same time, Park offered thoughts for the South Korean national team:
“On the other hand, this shows that we can also develop to that level. I hope the South Korean team will present a new, improved image in the remaining games of the tournament.”
Regarding Group F standings, Japan currently holds 4 points from 2 matches (1 win, 1 draw), ranking second in the group. They need only a draw in their final match against Sweden to secure progression to the round of 32 as group runners-up.
