Iran demonstrates sportsmanship by writing a thank-you message to Los Angeles despite difficult circumstances at the 2026 World Cup.
On 23 June 2026, the Iran national football team left a handwritten message in the locker room at SoFi Stadium to thank the people of Los Angeles and the fans for their warm welcome throughout the World Cup competition.
In the message, the Iran national team stated, "From ancient Persia thousands of years ago to Iran's modern development, the Iranian spirit remains alive and steadfast. Thank you, Los Angeles, for your kindness and hospitality... We came to Los Angeles with pride, competed with honor, and leave with dignity. Additionally, we thank all Iranians who gave their hearts, cheers, and spirit for our country over the past 180 minutes. May peace, respect, and friendship prevail over all nations."
Throughout the tournament, the Iran team had to relocate their training camp and practice facilities to Tijuana, Mexico, and travel to the United States for matches. They also faced visa restrictions and certain measures that prevented some staff members from entering the country.
Despite hardships and a tense political atmosphere—including being booed when the Iranian national anthem played and protests outside the stadium—Iran’s players delivered impressive performances by remaining unbeaten in two matches: a 2-2 draw against New Zealand in the opening game and a 0-0 draw against Belgium in the latest match. This marked the first time in Iran’s history they did not lose in their first two World Cup games.
In their final group match, Iran will face Egypt at Seattle Stadium on 27 June at 10:00 a.m. Thailand time, aiming to secure a place in the round of 32. Iran currently has 2 points, ranking second in the group, equal with Belgium, who will play New Zealand at the same date and time.
