Shearer Speaks Frankly About Portugal and Ronaldo After World Cup 2026 Starting XI Announcement

Shearer speaks frankly about Portugal and Ronaldo after the 2026 World Cup starting XI announcement.

On 23 June 2026, Alan Shearer, the legendary English striker, gave his latest remarks regarding Portugal's national team, led by 41-year-old superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, ahead of their second Group K match in pursuit of their first World Cup title.

Recently, Roberto Martínez announced Portugal's starting XI for their match against Uzbekistan. Cristiano Ronaldo was named in the attacking lineup alongside Bruno Fernandes, João Félix, and Pedro Neto, despite underperforming in the opening 1-1 draw against DR Congo.

Cristiano Ronaldo has now gone 10 consecutive major tournament matches (including the Euros and World Cup) without scoring for Portugal, yet he continues to start regularly. This prompted Alan Shearer to speak frankly about Portugal's hopes for the 2026 World Cup title.

Alan Shearer said, "I've been concerned all along that if Ronaldo doesn't accept the reality that he might not start every match or play every minute, it will definitely cause problems. And it seems that is exactly what's happening."

"The question is whether Roberto Martínez will be allowed to talk to him and have the courage to substitute him out, because Cristiano has immense influence. If he doesn't understand he can't play every minute, everything will fall apart."

"For me, I would start him in Portugal's next game, but if his performance is poor, I would tell him he has to be substituted. But that's the crucial point — will he accept being subbed off? Cristiano's influence is huge, and it's a very difficult situation."

"He is a world-class superstar who has performed excellently for many years, but lately he hasn't scored for Portugal and his form is far from his best."
