Netherlands Lose to Morocco on Penalties, Exit at Round of 32 in 2026 World Cup

Live score: The Netherlands lost to Morocco on penalties, exiting the 2026 World Cup at the round of 32 stage.

On 30 June 2026 GMT+7, in the round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup, the Netherlands, winners of Group F, faced Morocco, runners-up of Group C, in the last match of the day.

In the 20th minute of the first half, Morocco nearly took the lead from a right-side corner. Neil El Aynaoui made a near-post header that almost hit the underside of the crossbar, but Bart Verbruggen narrowly tipped it away.

A minute later, Morocco had another chance as Ismail Saibari flicked the ball out to Achraf Hakimi, who fired a strong shot, but it was saved by the fingertips of Bart Verbruggen.

In the 44th minute, the Netherlands had their first on-target shot when left-back Mickey van de Ven struck a powerful shot from outside the box, but it was comfortably saved by Yassine Bounou. The half ended 0-0.

Early in the second half, at the 52nd minute, Morocco almost scored again when Azzedine Ounahi threaded a pass to Achraf Hakimi, who broke into the box and struck a shot that rattled the crossbar loudly.

In the 72nd minute, the Netherlands took the lead 1-0. Substitute forward Wout Weghorst headed the ball on to Kristensen Sommerville, who was challenged and fell but managed to flick the ball to Cody Gakpo, who scored past Yassine Bounou.

After scoring, Cody Gakpo was moved to tears, having recently lost his unborn son with girlfriend Noa van der Bij last Saturday. His Dutch teammates gathered around him for support before the game resumed.

In stoppage time at 90+1 minutes, Morocco equalized 1-1. Chemseddine Talbi delivered a cross to Issa Diop, a defender joining the attack, who headed the ball into the far post, sending the match into extra time.

In the 96th minute, Morocco nearly took the lead when substitute striker Soufiane Rahimi deceived the Dutch defense and fired a shot on target, but Bart Verbruggen made an incredible save. After 120 minutes, the score remained 1-1, leading to penalties.

In the shootout, the Netherlands missed three penalties by Justin Kluivert, Quinten Timber, and Kristensen Sommerville. Morocco missed two penalties by Neil El Aynaoui and Achraf Hakimi but won the shootout 3-2.

As a result, the Netherlands missed the chance to compete for their first World Cup title. Morocco advanced to the round of 16 to face co-host Canada on 4 July.
