Shock as famous coach announces resignation after 2026 World Cup.
Ronald Koeman, head coach of the Netherlands national team, has officially announced his resignation to take responsibility for the team's painful exit after losing on penalties to Morocco in the 32-team knockout round of the 2026 World Cup.
Koeman stated, "Last night I decided to end my role as head coach of the Netherlands national team."
"We all dreamed of making history in this World Cup, but we failed. No one is more disappointed than me. As head coach, all responsibility falls on me."
Koeman also mentioned the health issues of his wife, Bartina, who was diagnosed with breast cancer, saying, "These past years have made me realize there are things more important than football."
"Football is my life, but health is priceless. When someone you love is fighting a serious illness, your perspective changes."
Koeman, aged 63, decided to take on the role of Netherlands coach for a second time in January 2023, having previously served from 2018 to 2020.
