In stoppage time at 90+5 minutes, Ecuador received a red card when Piero Incaapie used his hand to cover his mouth while speaking to Mexico substitute forward Santiago Jimenez and also pushed his head towards him. The referee reviewed VAR and immediately showed a red card, sending Incaapie off.
The match ended with Mexico winning 2-0, advancing to the 2026 World Cup Round of 16 to await the winner between England or DR Congo on 5 July. Ecuador was eliminated at the Round of 32, ending their journey here.
