Tuchel Speaks Frankly After England Advances to World Cup 2026 Round of 16, Comments on Next Opponent

Thomas Tuchel, head coach of the England national team, spoke openly after leading the team to a 16th-finals spot in the 2026 World Cup by defeating DR Congo.

Thomas Tuchel expressed pride in every player for not giving up despite falling behind early, ultimately overturning the score to defeat DR Congo 2-1 and advance to the 2026 World Cup round of 16.

The Three Lions nearly exited the World Cup at the hands of DR Congo, but Harry Kane emerged as the hero by scoring twice to secure a thrilling comeback victory. Tuchel expressed great pride in all his players.

Tuchel said, “This team refused to give up today. We didn’t give up, and that makes me very proud because they did what was necessary. It was a very tough situation today, but they showed great determination, and we earned a well-deserved victory. It’s wonderful to feel this as a coach on the sidelines.”

“I think the halftime score was unfair (being 0-1 behind). We conceded a very early goal, which complicated the situation more than it should have been. I also think we didn’t press the opponent effectively in the first 15-20 minutes.”

“I saw the stronger team attacking more freely and creating increasing danger. We maintained confidence, and even in the second half, we kept pressing continuously. Their goalkeeper made incredible saves.”

“While you try to support and assist from the sidelines, you feel the players have freedom. The players are not anxious.”

“They didn’t play out of fear but with determination. You have to find a way, and when you do, if the goalkeeper saves again, it makes things even tougher. So it’s essential to keep believing and keep knocking on the door until it breaks down.”

England’s reward is a trip to Estadio Azteca to face co-host Mexico in the round of 16 this Sunday.

“This might be one of the most beautiful and exciting games you can play—going up against Mexico at Estadio Azteca,” Tuchel said.
