Official decision made ahead of the heated match: England vs. Argentina in the 2026 World Cup semifinals.
On 14 July 2026, authorities announced they will intensify security measures for the 2026 World Cup semifinal between England and Argentina, set for Wednesday, 15 July.
Both teams face off once again in this legendary football rivalry at Atlanta Stadium, with England aiming to defeat the "defending champions" Argentina to reach the World Cup final for the first time since 1966.
Atlanta police are well aware of the longstanding conflict between these two nations, recalling the 1982 Falklands War between the United Kingdom and Argentina.
Although the conflict lasted just 74 days, it resulted in 649 Argentine soldiers killed, 255 British soldiers dead, and 3 civilian casualties.
The British overseas territory, called "Las Malvinas" in Argentina, remains a sovereignty dispute between the two countries to this day.
Recently, Atlanta police issued a statement: "As the city prepares to host the 2026 World Cup semifinals and welcome growing numbers of residents and tourists, the Atlanta Police Department has stepped up security and public order measures citywide."
"Additional personnel and resources have been deployed, with strategic placements at and around the stadium, entertainment districts, and crowded areas to ensure everyone enjoys a safe and fun experience."
"These proactive measures aim to protect the public, prevent crime, and guarantee that both locals and visitors can safely enjoy this historic event."
After Argentina's dramatic 3-2 win over Egypt in the Round of 16, footage showed players singing chants referencing the Falklands Islands and the Argentine legends Diego Maradona and Lionel Messi.
Maradona famously led Argentina to victory over England in the 1986 World Cup quarterfinals with his famous "Hand of God" goal, while Messi, as captain, is set to face the "Three Lions" for the first time in his career.
