England has made its decision after Tuchel's mistake led to a loss against Argentina, preventing the team from reaching the 2026 World Cup final in football.
On 16 July 2026, BBC Sport reported that the Football Association (FA) of England has made a decision regarding Thomas Tuchel's future as England's national team coach, following heavy criticism after the 2026 World Cup semifinal defeat.
England took the lead 1-0 through Anthony Gordon in the 55th minute, but afterwards they substituted in more defenders to focus entirely on defense. Ultimately, Argentina scored two goals at the 85th and 90+2 minutes, snatching a painful 2-1 victory.
This means England still cannot reach the World Cup final since their sole championship in 1966. Thomas Tuchel has been particularly scrutinized for his tactical approach, which has kept the "Three Lions" from reaching greater heights.
However, BBC Sport revealed that Thomas Tuchel still retains the trust of the Football Association and is expected to lead the team into Euro 2028. This decision is fully supported by FA CEO Mark Bullingham.
Thomas Tuchel, who extended his contract with England by two years in February, spoke about his future: "We will continue working according to the contract until the European Championship we are hosting."
"I am looking forward to that tournament, even though it’s still difficult to look that far ahead. Many football powerhouses have been eliminated before the semifinals, so reaching this stage is an achievement in itself."
"No one wants to hear this right now, including myself, because we all expect the best from ourselves — that’s the nature of competition."
For the European Championship (Euro 2028), England, Wales, Scotland, and the Republic of Ireland will co-host the tournament.
