In the aftermath of the 2026 World Cup final, Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 after extra time, clinching their second World Cup championship.
However, the match ended in controversy when Argentine midfielder Leandro Paredes, frustrated after losing the title and seeing Spanish players celebrating on the field, lost control and choked Spanish defender Eric Garcia.
Not stopping there, Paredes also grabbed and yanked the shirt of Spain's young midfielder Gavi, swinging and pushing him to the ground, nearly sparking a brawl between the two teams, prompting Argentina's coach Lionel Scaloni to intervene and separate them.
The referee witnessed the entire incident and issued a direct red card to Paredes, making him the second Argentine player sent off in the game after Enzo Fernandez was dismissed during injury time of the second half.
