Shearer Blames "Culprit" for Argentina Missing Out on 2026 World Cup Title
Alan Shearer, the legendary England striker, criticized Enzo Fernandez, Argentina's midfielder, after the Chelsea player was sent off during the match in which Argentina lost to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final.
Fernandez, who had a prior yellow card for arguing with the referee, received a second yellow for a late tackle on Spain's Pau Cubarsi, reducing Argentina to 10 men in the 90+2 minute before ultimately losing 0-1 to Spain.
Shearer said, "He put his team at a huge disadvantage because you knew Argentina would try to stretch the game to a penalty shootout, and he already had a yellow card from a foolish act of arguing with the referee."
"And once you have a yellow card, you shouldn't make that kind of tackle. It was really a stupid action on his part."
Enzo, aged 25, transferred from Benfica to Chelsea in 2023 and has been a key player both at club level and internationally since helping Argentina win the 2022 World Cup.
