On 22 July 2026, New York Post, an American media outlet, reported that Donald Trump, President of the United States, wants Gianni Infantino, President of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), to become the next Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN).
Gianni Infantino, 56, has grown closer to Donald Trump through organizing the 2026 World Cup. The Swiss football executive has made great efforts to win over the U.S. leader, including presenting him with the first-ever FIFA Peace Prize in December.
A source close to the U.S. President told the New York Post that Donald Trump believes Gianni Infantino is respected worldwide and recognizes his unique ability to unite people.
The next UN Secretary-General will be elected this year to replace António Guterres of Portugal, who is retiring at the end of December.
To secure this position, Gianni Infantino must gain support from the 15-member Security Council, where the 5 permanent members hold veto power, and then be confirmed by the United Nations General Assembly.
