Patrice Evra spoke about the Argentine Football Association following reports that it is planning legal action against those spreading false information.
On 23 Jul 2026 GMT+7, Patrice Evra, the legendary French left-back and former Manchester United player, commented on the Argentine Football Association after rumors emerged that they intended to take legal action against individuals who spread false information during the 2026 World Cup, where Argentina finished as runners-up.
Patrice Evra said, "If that’s true, football is entering a very strange era. Fans have spent generations accusing referees of favoring one team over another. They’ve debated offsides, red cards, penalties, and VAR since football began. You can’t settle those disputes in a court of law."
"If someone makes racist remarks or says something offensive to players, that’s a different matter. But if someone says, ‘I think Spain’s goal should have counted,’ or ‘I think Argentina got lucky with some decisions,’ that’s football. I sincerely hope these reports aren’t true because football without teasing would be one of the most boring sports in the world."
"If every controversial referee decision became a legal case, we’d eventually need lawyers sitting next to VAR officials. I can’t help but wonder… if Argentina had lifted the trophy, would we even be having this conversation?"
