Lewandowski speaks frankly about Lamine Yamal after his underperformance at the 2026 World Cup.
Robert Lewandowski, former forward for Barcelona, now playing for Chicago Fire in the U.S. Major League Soccer, openly stated that Lamine Yamal, his former Barcelona teammate, did not perform as well as expected in the recently concluded 2026 World Cup, despite Spain winning the championship.
Lewandowski said, “To be honest, we didn't see Yamal at his best. For me, his best was two seasons ago. He came into the World Cup just after an injury and was out of rhythm. Playing under those conditions is tough, but he showed quality. The team helped him, and he helped the team. That cooperation was perfect.”
Additionally, Lewandowski revealed he supported Spain in the latest World Cup, stating, “I know many players on Spain’s team. I spent a lot of time with them. It was very easy to cheer for them. I knew they were ready to win the World Cup. They are still very young and have a bright future ahead.”
Spain claimed their second World Cup title after defeating Argentina 1-0 in the final in New Jersey, with Ferran Torres scoring the winning goal in extra time. Luis de la Fuente’s team conceded only one goal across eight games, a record for a World Cup champion. Yamal played in every match, starting seven times and scoring one goal against Saudi Arabia, but recorded no assists.
