The Germany national football team has appointed Jürgen Klopp as their new head coach following Julian Nagelsmann's resignation.
On 24 July 2026, the German Football Association (DFB) officially confirmed that 59-year-old Jürgen Klopp has been appointed as the new head coach of the Germany national team.
Klopp signed an initial four-year contract, starting on 15 August 2026 and running through 2030. He takes over from Julian Nagelsmann, who resigned after Germany's shocking exit in the round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup following a defeat to Paraguay.
Klopp said, "The national team can unite Germans better than anything else. That is why this position is very special to me."
"I am grateful for all the experiences and lessons learned over the past 18 months at Red Bull. Now, I am excited about this special role in German football. We will work with humility and patience to build a team that fights for each other, enjoys playing football, and is a team the entire nation can be proud of and support."
Klopp will manage a national team for the first time in his career after achieving great success at club level.
He first made his name at Mainz, leading the team to promotion to the Bundesliga for the first time in 2004, then establishing them in the top division before leaving the club in 2008.
He then led Borussia Dortmund back to the top of German football, winning consecutive Bundesliga titles in 2011 and 2012, the DFB-Pokal in 2012, and reaching the UEFA Champions League final in the 2012/13 season.
After becoming Liverpool manager in October 2015, he led the club to the 2019 UEFA Champions League title and ended a 30-year wait for the top-flight league championship by winning the Premier League the following season.
His last major success with Liverpool came in the 2021/22 season when the team won both domestic cup competitions and finished second in the Premier League, just one point behind Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in one of the closest title races in Premier League history.
After leaving Liverpool at the end of the 2023/24 season, Klopp took a break from coaching before becoming Global Head of Football at Red Bull on 1 January 2025, overseeing the Red Bull football network worldwide, including RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga.
Klopp takes charge of the Germany national team still seeking their first major title since winning the 2014 World Cup, following early exits in the 2018, 2022, and 2026 World Cups.
