Argentine Player Reveals Messis Decision After 2026 World Cup Final

Leandro Paredes, midfielder for the Argentina national team, revealed that Lionel Messi intended the 2026 World Cup final to be his last game representing the national team.

On 27 July 2026, Leandro Paredes, midfielder for Argentina's national team, the 2026 World Cup runner-up, who recently returned to play for Boca Juniors and assisted in the win over O'Higgins in the Copa Sudamericana playoff, spoke openly about the atmosphere within the national team camp following their defeat in the World Cup final.

"It was painful, because throughout the World Cup we kept saying we didn’t want that final day to come," Paredes said.

"I believe Messi has already decided that game will be his last with the national team."

Although he believes Messi has planned to retire from the national team, Paredes still holds hope that his former Paris Saint-Germain teammate might change his mind.

"I hope it’s not the case and that he continues to play. Of course, the decision is up to him. Whatever he chooses, if it makes him happy, we will respect that decision."

Additionally, Paredes admitted he himself is uncertain about his future with the national team after the World Cup disappointment and emphasized the need to take time for careful consideration.

"I don’t know yet. It’s a time when everyone needs to accept what happened, think carefully, and avoid making emotional decisions. We still have a lot to discuss."

Paredes' comments add to the uncertainty surrounding Argentina’s national team after Nicolás Otamendi confirmed his retirement from international football, potentially forcing Lionel Scaloni to begin planning a new era if both Messi and Paredes choose to end their national careers.

Paredes stressed that many players are facing important decisions after years of collective achievements.

"For many, it will be a tough choice whether to continue or not. The time we've had has been wonderful; we’ve achieved great success together. Maintaining that standard won’t be easy. We have to consider many factors, discuss with the coach, and make careful decisions."
