On 27 July 2026, Lisandro Martinez, defender for Argentina's national team, clarified the controversy after the "Albiceleste" players faced heavy criticism for images showing several players turning their backs during Spain's celebration and trophy lift at the 2026 World Cup.
Previously, those images drew widespread criticism, with many viewing the behavior as disrespectful to the opponents, while Spain's forward Dani Olmo said,
"We are role models for the younger generation, and I think they should be as well."
Meanwhile, Stuart Pearce, former England defender, commented that the Argentine players turning their backs during the trophy ceremony "reflects many things" about their attitude.
However, images showed Flaco Lopez, the 25-year-old Palmeiras forward who appeared as a substitute twice in this World Cup, was the only Argentine player standing to watch Rodri lift the trophy, earning widespread praise from fans.
Recently, Martinez, who was named in FIFA's tournament best XI, confirmed that Argentina did not intend to ignore or disrespect Spain's national team in any way.
"We always respect our opponents. Some said we didn’t congratulate Spain after the match, but the truth is we greeted every player and the entire coaching staff," he said.
Martinez added, "The moment everyone saw us turning our backs was when our fans were singing. We turned to them to show respect and thank them for their support throughout the tournament."
Additionally, the "Red Devils" defender addressed the heavy criticism Argentina has received from fans worldwide:
"I have many feelings, including anger and disappointment, because I don’t think there is enough reason to generate such hatred. I see my teammates fighting hard on the field and fans supporting us, yet some say we are arrogant. I think those comments might reflect more about the people saying them than about us."
