Tiger Woods, former world number one golfer, has announced a temporary retirement from golf following his arrest for DUI after a rollover car accident.
On 1 Apr 2026 GMT+7, Tiger Woods, the former world number one American golfer, issued a personal statement on social media announcing a temporary retirement from golf after being arrested for DUI following a rollover car accident, necessitating medical treatment.
In his statement, Tiger Woods acknowledged the seriousness of his current situation and said this break is essential for sustainable recovery both personally and professionally. The 49-year-old golfer also thanked fans for their support and asked for privacy for his family and close ones during this time.
Regarding the cause, 50-year-old Tiger Woods was arrested for driving under the influence (DUI) after his Land Rover collided with another vehicle and flipped over in Martin County, Florida, on Friday, 27 March 2026 GMT+7.
Police investigations found two hydrocodone pills—an opioid painkiller—in Woods's clothing pocket, and he appeared intoxicated. Officials noted Woods's movements were slow and sluggish, and he exhibited hiccups throughout the investigation.
This is not Woods's first such incident. In 2017, he was arrested on DUI charges in Florida after police found him asleep in a damaged car and detected several substances in his system. A month later, he entered rehabilitation. In 2021, he suffered a severe car accident in Southern California, resulting in serious injuries to his right leg that required multiple surgeries over subsequent years.
Regarding his prior health, Woods underwent his seventh surgery in 11 years in October 2025 and was attempting a comeback for the Masters Tournament scheduled for 9 April 2026 GMT+7. On Tuesday, 31 March 2026 GMT+7, Woods's lawyer pleaded not guilty to all charges, requested a jury trial, and sought to withdraw from a hearing set for 23 April.
The PGA Tour issued a statement: “Tiger Woods is a legend of this sport. His achievements go beyond what happens on the course. But above all, Tiger is a human being, and we prioritize his health and well-being. We stand ready to support him in this important step.”
